Gothic Ghost Town: A Hauntingly Beautiful Piece of History Guide

Venture beyond Crested Butte and discover the eerie beauty of Gothic, a well-preserved ghost town nestled high in the mountains. Once a bustling silver mining community, Gothic now stands as a silent reminder of the boom-and-bust cycles that shaped the American West. Explore the weathered buildings, imagine the lives of the miners and their families, and soak in the breathtaking scenery that surrounds this historic site. It's a truly unique and unforgettable experience. Gothic was founded in 1879 during the silver mining boom. At its peak, the town boasted a population of over 1,000 residents, complete with saloons, hotels, and a school. However, the silver boom was short-lived, and by the early 20th century, Gothic was largely abandoned. In 1928, the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) was established in Gothic, transforming the ghost town into a world-renowned research center. RMBL scientists study the effects of climate change and other environmental factors on the surrounding ecosystem. While Gothic is primarily a research facility, visitors are welcome to explore the town and learn about its history. Take a self-guided walking tour, visit the RMBL visitor center, and learn about the ongoing research. Hiking and mountain biking trails abound in the surrounding area, offering stunning views of the Elk Mountains. While Gothic itself doesn't have restaurants, Crested Butte is a short drive away and offers a wide variety of dining options. Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy amidst the stunning scenery of Gothic.
